The Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting residents to participate in three surveys to inform future park planning projects

NEWS RELEASE

HALIFAX REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY

*************************

The Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting residents to participate in three surveys to inform future park planning projects.

Playing Field Strategy

The municipality is developing a Playing Field Strategy to guide the planning and development of playing fields over the next 15 years to meet community needs across the region. The strategy will include an examination of:

  • Sports fields – all weather and natural grass sport fields, often used for soccer, football, rugby, and ultimate frisbee, among others
  • Ball diamonds – often used for sports like baseball, softball, slo-pitch, and fastpitch

Whether you use playing fields for organized sports, leisure, or other recreational uses, your input will help develop recommendations towards meeting future recreation needs in our communities.

The Playing Field Strategy will be included with a staff report to Regional Council in late 2021. The survey will be available from Thursday, Dec. 3 to Monday, Jan. 18. To take the survey, visit halifax.ca/surveys

Rehab Lands/Bissett Road in Cole Harbour

The municipality is launching a survey and ideas board regarding park planning for the former Halifax County Rehabilitation Centre property (Rehab lands) on Bissett Road in Cole Harbour. Different options for the new park including, whether this site is suitable for a dog off-leash area, are being investigated.

This is the first in a three-phase engagement, which will inform a staff report to Regional Council in late 2021. The survey will be available from Thursday, Dec. 3 to Monday, Jan. 18. To take the survey or post ideas for the park, visit Shape Your City Halifax.

Eastern Passage Dog Off-leash Area

As part of the municipality’s Off-leash Area workplan, four off-leash area options are being considered in Eastern Passage:

  • Eastern Passage Common ROST ballfield*
  • Eastern Passage Common Seaside soccer field*
  • Shearwater Flyer Park (area between parking lot and trail)
  • Smelt Brook Park

*Note: These locations would be off-leash in the winter from Nov. 1 – May 1 and open as a pilot project in the summer from June 1 – Nov 1 in the mornings only (6 – 10 a.m.).

A survey is being launched for residents to provide feedback on the four options, with a staff report to Regional Council in 2021. The survey will be available from Thursday, Dec. 3 to Monday, Jan. 18. For more information about the off-leash options and to take the survey, visit Shape Your City Halifax.
