The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) is working on a project to conduct a field technical survey on road network assets covering 20,000 km of road lanes, bridges and tunnels. The survey aims at recording integrated road assets to ensure the provision of a safe and high quality road network, said the Ministry on its Twitter account.
The project will also help build a smart database to evaluate its performance, raise the level of safety, and reduce traffic accidents. The project made remarkable advancement, as so far, 3,125km of local roads have been examined and revealed.
360-degree panoramic pictures were taken for 1,900km of highways and key roads. Using ROMDAS technique 3D screening was made for 1,000 km road surface. Under the project, a programme for repairing local roads was prepared and submitted to the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) for implementation.
Training programmes to develop the capability of employees for all phases have been completed. The Ministry has adopted most advanced techniques and devices to assess the performances of road assets. MX9 survey device is being used to track and record condition of road assets.
A multifunctional ROMDAS device has been mobilised to make 3D photography of road surface. The project is following international standard and Qatar Guideline for Maintenance Work. Most advanced system has been adopted to collect, analyse and upgrade data. The data is being recorded through the Geographical Information System (GIS).
The slipping rate on the road surface is also being monitored to increase safety levels and reduce traffic accidents. To increase road quality, the International roughness index has been put in place. The technical survey includes 20,000km road networks — road lanes, bridges and tunnels. Under the project integrated road, assets are also being recorded and evaluated like lampposts, signboards and traffic safety barricades.
The main goal of the project is to support the National Development Strategy and Qatar National Vision 2030. The project also aims at building a smart database to evaluate the performance level of road assets to ensure the provision of a high-quality road network.
