4.7 quake 31 Jan 7:34 pm (GMT +3:30)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred early evening on Sunday 31 January 2021 at 7:04 pm local time near Mīnāb, Hormozgan, Iran, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Mīnāb (pop. 70,800) located 107 km from the epicenter, and Bandar Abbas (pop. 352,200) 110 km away.
