The University of Nevada, Reno’s Great Basin Center for Geothermal Energy has a job opening for a research scientist.

The Great Basin Center for Geothermal Energy (GBCGE) within the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) invites applications from qualified candidates to fill a geothermal Research Scientist position.

NBMG is a public service unit within the College of Science at UNR and serves as the state geological survey for Nevada.

This full time position will support two major federally funded projects: International Geothermal Capacity Building (funded by the U.S. Department of State), and the INGENIOUS project (funded by the U.S. Department of Energy) (approximately 50% effort on each project).

For the geothermal capacity building project, the Research Scientist will contribute to establishing new collaborative relationships with partner country researchers in the Asia-Pacific region, manage and interpret geoscientific datasets provided by our foreign partners, develop new conceptual models of geothermal systems, and support the development and application of play fairway workflows and statistical approaches that are appropriate for the geological setting and data availability in each partner country.

Additionally, the Research Scientist will support the training of foreign government geoscientists in geothermal exploration best practices via in-person workshops and virtual webinars and develop customized training materials and presentations. For the INGENIOUS project (INnovative Geothermal Exploration through Novel Investigations Of Undiscovered Systems), the Research Scientist will support the project PI with the management of major project tasks including quarterly reporting to the project sponsor, to ensure that project activities and schedules are met in a timely manner.

Additionally, the Research Scientist will contribute to the development of new conceptual models and resource estimates of geothermal resources in the Great Basin region of the western USA, fieldwork to collect new geoscientific data, and support the development of innovative, geostatistically-based, geothermal exploration workflows for the region.

The position requires substantial teamwork and interactions with GBCGE personnel, foreign government partners, and US-based collaborators.  We are therefore seeking candidates with excellent inter-personal skills, well-developed communication skills, ability to meet project deadlines, and demonstrated ability to work effectively in informal and formal teams with individuals from diverse communities and cultures. The successful applicant will be joining a vibrant, motivated team in the GBCGE who are dedicated to geothermal science and increasing our understanding of geothermal resource potential in the western USA and beyond. The team includes students, research scientists and faculty from within NBMG, the Department of Geological Sciences and Engineering, and the Desert Research Institute.

Required Qualifications

MSc or PhD in geology, geochemistry, geophysics, hydrogeology, or related field.
