The Port’s local community radio station has topped the latest research survey for the local government area.

At a presentation held at Nelson Bay Golf Club last Thursday night, Port Stephens 100.9FM was announced number one in a survey conducted by the independent random telephone experts, Jetty Research, as part of the Taverner Group.

“From Tomaree Head to Lemon Tree Passage, the Port Stephens community FM radio station has been recognised as the most listened-to station,” said station member Christine Walton.

“The numbers demonstrated that the dominance over other stations broadcasting into the area is very significant.

“The station’s strategy of targeting the more mature age group is clearly being effective and this is reflected in the survey results. Whilst the station does have a number of more specialist programs, the main focus during prime listening hours is on rock and pop music from the 1960s through to the ’80s, which happens to be the preference of our listeners.”

The emphasis on Australian content was also appreciated by its listeners, said Ms Walton.

“What appealed most to listeners was the mix of music that the station played and the fact that it was local and had news and information on things happening in our immediate area.

“Listeners also commented positively on the quality of the local presenters, all of whom are volunteers.”
