Stony Brook University has been ranked No. 45 among all U.S. universities in the QS US University Rankings 2020, placing it in the top 6% nationwide. The university is also ranked as the No. 1 public university in New York State.

The rankings are based on weighted scores in the categories of Employability, Diversity and Internationalization, Learning Experience and Research.

“This stellar showing highlights Stony Brook’s continued upward trajectory as a premier American public institution,” Interim President Michael A. Bernstein said. “I am especially proud that our diverse and global learning environment is recognized in these rankings.”

Stony Brook’s strong showing is due in part to its high score in the category of Diversity and Internationalization, in which it ranks No. 14 nationally. This category includes the following indicators: gender pay gap, faculty gender diversity, ratio of undergraduates receiving Pell grants, students’ ethnicity, number of Fulbright students and ratio of international students.

Stony Brook is also ranked as the fifth best university in New York State, after Cornell, Columbia, NYU, and University of Rochester.

“Stony Brook is an internationally recognized research university offering graduate degrees in the arts and sciences, engineering, business and the health professions,” according to the profile on the QS site. “Stony Brook faculty are leaders in national and worldwide projects, and their work has led to such groundbreaking discoveries as the invention of the MRI technology that won the Nobel Prize for Medicine.”

The rankings have been released as a part of a new subset of the QS World University Rankings specifically targeting U.S. institutions.

The first annual QS World University Rankings: USA is designed to assess how well universities are responding to the social, intellectual, and economic challenges of our time. Universities are ranked according their research performance and career outcomes as well as a range of indicators assessing each institution’s social impact and attempts to foster equitability. Such indicators include gender pay gap, faculty gender diversity, ratio of undergraduate students receiving Pell Grants, and retention rate. The methodology also evaluates universities based on the efforts they are making to support the 17 UN Sustainable Development goals.
