Coronavirus Online, Aadhaar, PAN, other frauds warning: The spread of this dreaded virus has jolted the whole world as it has killed more than 26,000 people in the entire world and it has reached India as well. More than 700 people have been found infected by the Coronavirus here. However, in this time of panic, cyber criminals are busy looting your hard-earned money and this has made Delhi police to issue an advisory for these dire times, asking people to ensure their own safety as well as of their money from the Coronavirus and the predatory cyber criminals.

Warning people about the active cyber criminals trying to exploit the Coronavirus panic in India, the Delhi Police tweeted from its official Twitter handle, “Be safe from #Corona and Cyber Crime. Here are some of the recent Cyber Crime modus operandi related to coronavirus and their prevention methods.” The Delhi Police went on to add that Cyber Criminals are trying to capitalise on the fear people have of the Coronavirus epidemic.

The Delhi Police made a list for the people of some recent frauds and scams that cyber criminals have used:

Online Fraud: Scamsters create fraudulent websites, e-commerce platforms, social media accounts and emails claiming to sell and deliver medical products and the victims are asked to pay for the same via online bank transfer. Needless to say, the innocent public loses its money.

Telephone Fraud: The fraudsters pretend to be relatives of a Coronavirus infected patient who has run out of money. They ask the victims to pay online for the purchase of medicine and the run away with the money.

Phishing: In this fraud, emails or some links related to the Coronavirus are sent to the victim and they are asked to click on it. This leads to instant loss of a lot of money for the victims.

Speaking on the above-mentioned types of cyber crime, Pawan Duggal, a Delhi-based cyber crime expert said, “In all these above-mentioned online frauds, the fraudster tries to get the data through a single click to their send link and once the victim clicks on that link, the entire data like Bank account, Aadhaar card, PAN Card, date of birth, etc become available to the fraudster. This information is enough to execute online fraud.”

Suggesting people save themselves from both COVID-19 and cyber criminals, Delhi Police tweeted some do’s and dont’s. Following these do’s and dont’s will ensure safety of your hard-earned money from these online fraudsters.
