COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A University of Missouri survey shows improving diversity at the school is a top concern among faculty members.

The 2019 Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education report from MU showcases several recommendations for the next three years.

A faculty committee in its recommendations based on the survey said diversity should be considered the most pressing issue at MU. The report outlines that minority faculty members consistently report the lowest levels of satisfaction. The satisfaction levels reported are lower than other similar institutions and some COACHE participants, the survey said.

According to the survey, the lack of diversity was also listed as one of the worst aspects of MU since the university started participating in COACHE in 2013.

The survey’s co-chair said MU is committed to improving diversity.

“We are engaged in this effort precisely because we care about Mizzou and want to see the institution be a welcoming place to work and study for all members of our community,” said Leigh Neier, a College of Education teaching professor.

Other recommendations to include improvements to compensation, faculty department leadership, interdisciplinary work, mentoring, recognition and research and creative work support.

MU faculty reported the best aspect of MU since 2013 is the quality of colleagues. Support of colleagues, cost of living, collaborative opportunities and academic freedom were also listed among the top aspects of professional life at MU in the survey.

The report showed that 41 percent of faculty members responded to the survey — a 13 percent decrease in respondents compared to the last time it was administered in 2016. Over the last three years, the survey points out, senior leadership, departmental leadership, divisional leadership, tenure policies and health and retirement benefits have all improved.

COACHE is administered and coordinated by Harvard University.
