BENGALURU: Tech upskilling in areas like artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML), digital marketing and design thinking is crucial for boosting organisational performance, a survey by skilling platform Great Learning has found.
The survey was conducted among 307 companies and 25% of all respondents believe equipping AI and machine learning skills is the goto skill for upgradation.
In light of the growing digitisation of all aspects of business, digital marketing was seen as the second-most crucial tech skill required for companies to thrive in today’s increasingly digital world. Around 19% respondents believe digital marketing skills are imperative for companies to grow.
“The technology skill gap among employees is one of the biggest challenges that organisations in India are beset with. While it is encouraging to see that a majority of companies are aware of the need for upskilling, the time to act is now,” Hari Krishnan Nair, co-founder of Great Learning, said.
The top six most demanding AI jobs are machine learning engineer, robotics scientist, business intelligence developer, software developer and AI research scientist. The demand for such jobs is high because there is a lack of readily qualified people in the country. Hence, such positions also command a premium salary.
Cloud computing is also another flourishing field. Research firm IDC estimates that the Indian cloud computing market will grow to $4 billion in the next few years from $2.2 billion now, which will create more than 1 million jobs by 2022.
In India, the salary of an entry-level cloud professional is between Rs 5-7 lakh, higher than a traditional IT engineer who earns about Rs 3.5 lakh per annum.
Major jobs in the category include solutions architect, cloud administrator and cloud devops engineer.
The survey said that 40% of the companies surveyed are looking to bridge the tech talent gap by upskilling their current workforce, while 37% are using hiring to make up for the demand and supply gap. Only 22% of companies are hoping to beat the talent gap by outsourcing these roles.
