The Academy Award winner Jared Leto has compiled a fairly esoteric career over the past 25 years, playing roles as varied as real-life background runner Steve Prefontaine, the killer Mark David Chapman, roles in the films acclaimed by the review. Fight club Y Dallas Buyers Club, and a notoriously divisive representation of the Joker in Suicide Squad. His next project is Sony’s vampire antihero movie Morbium, and in the period before the film’s summer launch, Leto has taken Instagram to connect with his fans in a surprisingly direct way. January 24 he posted a short video encouraging his 10.3 million followers to contact him by phone, saying:
“Hi guys, it’s me, Jared Leto, your old friend. I miss you. I’ve been thinking about things. We’ve known each other for a long time and probably should give you my phone number. It’s been a while. I’d love to hear from you. you. Send me a message. Tell me if you miss me. What’s going on? I’ll hit you back. The number (213) 335-2223. We’ll put it on the screen too. We love you, take care. Bye. “
The comments are naturally full of fans who question the authenticity of the number, and at least one person suggests that it connects to a “marketing robot,” but few seem to have made the effort to contact the number. It turns out that calling him brings an audio recording of the actor and musician, saying:
“Hi. Hey. It’s a joke. Uh, it’s me, Jared. You have the right number. I’m not here now, so send me a text message and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible. Well. Bye.”
Meanwhile, send a text message to the Los Angeles phone number trigger a link To be sent to your phone and request the following response:
“Boo. It’s Jared Leto. Yes, it’s really me. Click on this link to add to my contacts so I can send you a text message. I can’t wait to talk to you.”

By clicking on the link, you are redirected to a mobile version of my.community.com, which also appears at the top of the Leto Instagram page, which requests the user’s first and last name, gender identity, date of birth, city of residence and email address. If you feel comfortable sharing that amount of personal information online (the data you entered personally were not, say, completely accurate), you will return to your text message to find a follow-up response:
“Santo guacamole, now we are friends of text. I have to say this, but everything after this is 100% me. Promise … The frequency of messages will vary. The message and data rates of your provider may apply. Answer HELP for help, STOP to cancel. ”
It remains to be seen if Jared Leto and I are now “text message friends”, but I will post it in the hashtag # Leto2133352223 on Twitter to keep everyone updated. In the meantime, Morbium Arrives in theaters on July 31.
