When the age crosses the boundary of 30, human beings start losing muscle mass and this in turn affects their ability to perform daily activities. This is nothing but a disorder called as age-related sarcopenia or sarcopenia with aging.
Sarcopenia is defined as a reduction of muscle mass due to the natural aging process. This loss in muscle affects a person’s ability to perform daily activities, his overall strength, and body functions. In 2016, this condition which causes disability and dependence was announced as a ‘disease’ by the World Health Organization. Consequences of this disease are many: augmented risk of falls, prolonged stay at hospitals, infections, and many more. Though aging is unavoidable, developing age-related sarcopenia does not have to be. Fortunately, there are preventive measures people can take that can reduce their chances of getting affected by this disease.

Recently, with an aim to prevent or treat sarcopenia, Sestina Falcone and France Pietri-Rouxel, two researchers from the Institute of Myology, have explained the role of a protein, CaVβ1E, in the adult mouse muscle. CaVβ1E is a protein generally seen in muscles of the embryo. By studying the young and aging muscles in mice, the team discovered that CaVbeta1E leads to activation of the GDF5 factor. This technique helps in preventing sarcopenia by upholding the muscle mass and strength of aged mice. The team discovered the CaVbeta1E protein in humans and stated that its existence is connected to the loss of muscle mass of the adults. Recently, this study got published in the Science Translational Medicine and has opened a new arena of experimentation in the development of therapeutic methods for treating Sarcopenia related to aging.
The team confirmed the effectiveness of CaVbeta1E or GDF5 overexpression in 78 week-old mice which is same as a 70 year old human. After treating these mice for few weeks, the researchers observed that the mice retained their muscle mass and also gained strength. Further, the team acknowledged the existence of CaVbeta1E protein in human beings (hCaVbeta1E) and stated that a reduction of its presence is linked with the reduction of muscle mass in aged people. At present, the team is experimenting on prevention and clinical applications that might sustain the strength, body mass, and muscle quality throughout the aging process.
On the other hand, surge in investment in research and developments to discover effective treatments is anticipated to supplement the growth of sarcopenia treatment market. This is backed by the data mentioned in a report published by Research dive, which says that the sarcopenia treatment market is expected to reach $3975.0 Million by 2026, and grow significantly in the coming years all across the world. At present, several public and private organizations have started getting involved in formulating effective remedies for sarcopenia. Some of the major companies actively contributing the growth of sarcopenia treatment market are Radius Health Inc., GlaxoSmithKline plc, Abbott Laboratories, Five Prime Therapeutics, Inc., Novartis AG, Pfizer Inc., Sanofi S.A., Bayer AG, Eli Lilly and Company, Nestlé S.A., Cadila Healthcare Ltd, and others.
