When it comes to choosing the right cloud security controls, it’s clear the only option is a Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB) solution. Gartner has done a great job this year keeping up with cloud security market as it continues to evolve and mature with the release of the 2019 Gartner CASB MQ and Critical Capabilities. This year, the market is down from 13 CASB vendors to 9 vendors from last year that meet the expanding criteria required to be classified as a CASB vendor. In other words, the definition of CASB has expanded and the technology within CASB is where organizations need to spend their time to distinguish between the solutions.
The new definition of CASB
As a quick recap, Gartner has defined this category of cloud security controls, not as a specific set of features but a combination of products and services that address the security gaps in an organization’s use of cloud services. Specifically, Gartner highlights that CASB is designed to protect data that’s stored in the cloud.
As organizations continue to adopt cloud services such as G Suite, Office 365, and other SaaS and IaaS services, security requirements are increasing at the same accelerated pace. Take for instance Cloud Security Posture Management (CSPM). A technology that is foundational for assessing security gaps and maintaining compliance for Cloud Infrastructure such as AWS, Azure, and even SaaS applications such as Box and Office 365. This feature is now foundational to CASB.
How to choose the right CASB vendor
To choose the right CASB vendor, we recommend using the Gartner CASB MQ Critical Capabilities report. This report highlights a number of CASB features. It’s important for organizations to start with understanding their most critical security gaps and comparing these gaps to the features and ratings in the report.
