The use of CREON2000A ultraviolet (UV) air irradiation system technology was an effective environmental treatment for reducing asthma severity in children with mild to moderate asthma, according to study results presented at the American Association of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) Virtual Annual Meeting held February 26 to March 1, 2021.

Study researchers sought to identify whether the single environmental control intervention, CREON2000A UV air irradiation system (General Innovation & Goods, Inc.), would be effective in asthma management. A randomized sham-controlled, parallel group, multicenter, double-blind study was conducted to compare CREON200A UV to a sham unit. The system was installed in the homes of children with mild to moderate asthma. The primary outcome was the Composite Asthma Severity Index (CASI) measured beginning at baseline to every 4 months after randomization for 12 months. A linear regression model determined statistical significance. The difference in the change of CASI scores from baseline to 12 months between groups served as the primary intent-to-treat endpoint.

There were no significant differences in demographic and baseline characteristics between the CREON2000A UV (n=40) and the sham unit (n=39) groups. The average change in asthma severity for children significantly improved from baseline to 12 months when using CREON2000A UV (change of CASI, -1.7; P =.007) vs the sham unit (change of CASI, -1.1; P =.3). Additionally, the difference in the change of CASI scores from baseline to 12 months between the 2 groups was significantly greater and more clinically meaningful for the CREON2000A UV group (difference in the change of CASI, 0.6; P =.006).

Study researchers concluded that the CREON2000A is an effective environmental treatment for reducing asthma severity in children with mild to moderate disease.
