IITs, which are National Supercomputing Mission’s nodal centres for training in high performance supercomputing and artificial intelligence, along with C-DAC are offering an online course on introduction to machine learning for interested participants. While the course fee for students is Rs 500, it is being offered to all others at Rs 2000. Along with C-DAC, the IITs that are jointly offering this course are IIT Goa, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Palakkad.

The 7-week course aims at equipping learners with the basic knowledge of machine learning. The online classes will be held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 5 to 6 pm followed by interaction and questions until 6:30 pm. Participants would be required to have a basic knowledge of programming like python as well as a basic understanding of probability, calculus, linear algebra or matrices. On the completion of the online course on machine learning, an online examination will be conducted. Top performers will be given book prizes and certificates with grades, while the other participants will receive certificates of participation.

What the Online Course on Machine Learning by IITs will Cover

The course will cover the following topics over a period of two months:

  • Supervised learning: Introduction, k-Nearest Neighbors, Linear regression, Extensions of linear regression, polynomial curve fitting, Linear models for classification, the Perceptron algorithm , Logistic regression, Optimization algorithms: Gradient Descent, and Newton’s method.
  • Machine learning in practise: Training, overfitting, underfitting, bias variance tradeoff, SVM overview, decision trees, random forests, unsupervised learning: introduction, PCA, and Kernel PCA.
  • K-Means, Maximum Likelihood estimation, Gaussian Mixture Models, EM Algorithm and variants, Spectral Clustering, Intro to Online Machine Learning, Intro to Multi-armed Bandits or RL.

Important Dates for the Online Course on Machine Learning by IITs

Interested students may register on the IIT Goa website before 28 February 2021. The course will be conducted from 9 March to 22 April 2021 by Dr. Clint P George, Dr. Satyanath Bhat, and Dr. Arun Rajkumar from the organising IITs.
