NEW DELHI: Digitization of services comes with its own risks. Fraudsters often create fake versions of popular websites to lure citizens and steal money from them. Government websites are no exceptions and you may find many websites that look similar to the official ones. However, there is a way to verify the authenticity of such websites.

As shared by the cybercrime department on Twitter, before transacting on any website one should check the URL of the website. Official government websites end with either gov.in or nic.in, a tweet by Cyber Dost says. In the post, the cyber security handle is further advising citizens to verify circulating email addresses and messages regarding government welfare schemes.

“Always avail beneficiary schemes of Government from official websites ending with (.gov.in; nic.in etc). Verify the email address / message in circulation regarding beneficiary schemes,” reads the post by Cyber Dost.

For those unaware, the Ministry of Home Affairs is observing October as National Cyber Security Awareness Month to promote cyber safety awareness among citizens.

In another tweet, Cyber Dost is warning citizens against free online download of books, movies and songs from internet websites. These sites, the tweet says, could either be stealing one’s personal information or causing damage to one’s mobile device and laptop.

“Beware of downloading contents like books, movies, songs, etc for ‘free’ from websites /Apps, as these may be used for stealing your data or damage your computer, mobile phone,” reads the post online.
