Researchers investigating the professional behaviour of pharmacists are looking for prescribers, pharmacy assistants or technicians, and consumers to participate

You are invited to take part in a project run by researchers from the University of Western Australia which is investigating the professional behaviour of pharmacists. To take part in this project, you must be one of the following:

  • A pharmacy assistant or technician that works regularly with pharmacists in a professional capacity.
  • A registered prescriber that interacts with pharmacists in a professional capacity.
  • A consumer that has knowledge of pharmacy and the services that they offer, and you have visited a pharmacy in the last 12 months.

PhD student Deanna Mill and Master of Pharmacy students Altinka Res, Emma Murace, Fraser Fullerton, and Matthew Halliday are undertaking the study under the supervision of Professor Rhonda Clifford, Dr Amy Page, Dr Jacinta Johnson, Dr Kenneth Lee, Dr Danielle D’Lima, Dr Sandra Salter and Dr Liza Seubert. And with the assistance of Diana Benino.

What is the project about?

Pharmacists strive to maintain a high level of professionalism, that is often demonstrated through professional behaviour. It is important to know what behaviours are considered professional for pharmacists so that the profession can continue to work towards and exceed the expectations of the society that it serves. Thus, the aim of this study is to identify what behaviours key stakeholders believe demonstrate professional behaviour for pharmacists.

What does participation involve?

Participation in this research means that you will attend one online focus group session of up to 1.5 hours. The session will involve a researcher asking you and a group of other participants questions about pharmacist behaviour and what pharmacist behaviours you consider to be professional. The researcher will ask the questions and guide the discussion so they can give all participants in the group time to answer. There are no right or wrong answers to the questions. We only seek your opinion.

The discussion will be recorded (audio and video) so that the researchers can analyse the data after the session.

Your participation in this study is entirely voluntary and there are no consequences if you decide not to take part. You may withdraw from this study at any time without explanation. However, once you submit data, it is not possible to withdraw it.

Your privacy

We will treat your participation in this study and any information you provide confidentially. We will remove your personal identifiers from the data after the audio recordings have been transcribed. The recordings will then be deleted. We will then keep the data in a non-identifiable format, in a password-protected computer, or a secure server for a minimum of seven years. We will not disclose your identity to persons outside of this research team unless you wish to be acknowledged for your participation. The designated Archives Officer will destroy data seven years after publication. Hard copy materials will be shredded and recycled. We ask that you do not share the identity of any other participants and the content of the focus groups to anyone outside of the research team.

Possible Benefits

You will help us to understand what professional behaviour is for pharmacists. This may help regulators, professional associations and academics to improve the consistency of behaviour shown by pharmacists.

Possible Risks and Risk Management Plan

There are no foreseeable personal risks to you in this study.

Reimbursement

You will be reimbursed for your participation. This will consist of a once off $60 payment via an online gift card.

Access to results of study

If you want to know what the results of this study are. You will be able to provide us your contact details and we can inform you when the results are available and how you can access them.

Funding

This study is partially funded by the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia.
