Consumer demand for grocery products continues to be high in the UK, Netherlands and Germany, but has dropped back in France, as coronavirus restrictions ease, new studies by IRI have found.

The IRI Demand Index and IRI Inflation Tracker for w/c 6 July, which highlight key trends in the wake of COVID-19, found that in all five markets analysed, demand for food is growing and outpacing non-food, except in France where both are in decline.

Non-food is also declining in the Netherlands and Italy, the studies found.

Prices continue to increase in all five countries, except in Italy, where prices are stable. Food prices are outpacing non-food prices in all markets.

In Germany, France and the Netherlands, Alcohol has seen the highest price increases, but this has not impacted growing demand. Italy has also seen strong growth in the Alcohol category, particularly in wines, spirits and aperitifs.

Weather Boost

A combination of good weather and bank holiday weekends have boosted consumer demand, particularly in the UK, where several categories, including Beers, Wines & Spirits, Frozen, Tobacco, Fresh Meat and Fish, Ice Cream, and Carbonates have all sen growth.

Non-food growth has largely been driven by the Household category, in particular Cleaning Products, with the UK, Netherlands, Italy and Germany all seeing demand up.

The IRI Demand Index monitors weekly changes in FMCG/CPG purchases, by value sales, against the year-ago period across departments/aisles, categories and, in some countries, across retail formats and regions, while the IRI Inflation Tracker tracks changes in the pricing of consumer-packaged goods, monitoring weekly shifts in consumer prices against the year-ago period across departments/aisles, categories and, in some countries, across retail formats and regions.
