In the world of luxury skincare, Sunday Riley stands among the giants, largely due to the loyal following of one of its flagship products: the Sunday Riley Good Genes All-In-One Lactic Acid Treatment. The cult-favorite exfoliator, meant to help with the appearance of skin discoloration, post-acne scarring and age spots, boasts more than 2,000 five-star reviews and more than 172,000 loves on Sephora alone, but one hangup many shoppers had with the product for years remained its hefty price tag.

Initially retailing for $105 for the 1-ounce bottle and $158 for the 1.7-ounce value sized bottle, this product was the definition of a skincare splurge. However, as of Jan. 21, the beloved Good Genes treatment received a permanent 20 percent price cut, making the two sizes $85 and $122, respectively.

The brand officially shared the news in an Instagram post, following a series of teasers posted throughout the week prior to the announcement.

In addition to changing the price, the company’s founder and namesake, Sunday Riley, shared that changes have also been made to the Good Genes formula. In a press release, she explained the triethanolamine compound found in the product — which works to adjust the formula’s pH and prevents users from being burned by the lactic acid in the treatment — is now replaced with greener, more sustainable alternatives, sodium phytate and potassium hydroxide.

“All of the good stuff (including the actives) remains the same,” she reassured buyers.

She even admitted in an emailed statement to HuffPost that the product’s steep price hasn’t sat well with her for years: “It’s a ten-year-old price tag and out of date with today’s economy and goals.”

While Sephora, DermStore and Amazon were among the first retailers to update the price across their websites, other sites including the likes of Ulta, Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, Olivela and Anthropologie are yet to reflect the decreased price point in their listings.

With this news — especially the founder’s reasoning for reducing the price — certainly being commendable, the truth remains that this product is still financially out of reach for the average consumer. If you are eager to try the Sunday Riley Good Genes Lactic Acid Treatment and your budget ranges between $25 and $83, Sephora offers three sets from the brand, all including mini versions of the customer favorite product, allowing you to give it a try before you consider making the big splurge.
