Karnataka recorded maximum number of Covid-19 deaths in a single day with seven casualties, while Bengaluru crossed 600-mark.

However, Friday also saw the highest ever discharges in a single day, with 464 patients walking out of hospitals.

Cases in Bengaluru continue to rise. The city reported 36 cases, which is the second highest for in state. Of them, 11 were cases of Influenza like illness (ILI) and five of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI). Officials are still tracing contacts for nine other cases.

Bengaluru recorded four deaths — two ILI cases of a 61-year-old and 49-year-old women and two SARI cases of a 65-year- old woman and a 52-year-old man.

Two more deaths were reported from Kalaburagi and one from Hassan. Around 19 patients are currently in ICU (11 in Bengaluru, three in Kalaburgi, two in Bidar and one each in Dharwad, Mandya and Dakshina Kannada). On a positive note, two worst-affected districts — Yadgir (129 cases) and Udupi (125 cases) — saw huge number of discharges followed by Belagavi (62 cases) and Kalaburagi (60 cases).

BBMP gears up for ‘field hospitals’

Though cases in the city are going up, BBMP Commissioner BH Anil Kumar said there was nothing to worry as most of these are results of cases that accumulated in the last few days. “Bengaluru labs also test reports from neighbouring districts and there is always a pressure to give their results first. Hence, the results in Bengaluru get delayed and pile up, so we see a sudden spike. The situation in Bengaluru is completely under control,” he said on Friday.

Kumar said they were planning for a contingency plan in case of an explosion. “Currently, we have dedicated hospitals in Victoria and Bowring. The situation is under control and even if cases rise, we can always use the private facility. However, as an emergency measure, we have already identified ‘field hospitals’ like Kanteerava stadium, Tripura Vasini, Karnataka Trade Promotion Organisation and Bangalore International Exhibition Centre facilities. We can also draw professionals from private hospitals if the field hospitals are made operational,” the BBMP commissioner added.

Conducted jointly by ICMR-GOI, National TB Institute-GOI and Government of Karnataka in May, the sero-surveillance study revealed that in Bengaluru and Kalaburagi, 0.25 per cent of the surveyed population showed the evidence of past exposure to SARS-COV-2 at the time of the survey. The survey points out that measures taken during the lockdown have been successful in keeping the transmission low and preventing rapid spread of Covid-19. This implies that a large portion of the population must continue following precautionary measures as suggested by the Government. This is the baseline survey and the Government is looking forward to continued support for further rounds of survey.

3 new containment zones

Three new containment zones have been added in the city — designated streets in BTM Layout, Horamavu and Hongasandra. The total number of containment zones in Bengaluru stands at 116.
