Road conditions in Madang Province, both urban and rural, have deteriorated over the years since the national government scrapped the Provincial Works Plant and Transport Division, known as PTB, in 1994.
That’s according to Madang MP and Police Minister Bryan Kramer.
Mr Kramer, in a statement, said the district is now carrying out a comprehensive road works survey to maintain all its road networks.
“The workshop is part of the District Works Program that would start this year.
“It is facilitated by Joshua Tengdui, a civil engineer with Kramer Ausenco and former construction engineer with ExxonMobil.
“Mr Tengdui travelled with me to Madang on an initial eight-day field trip that will involve carrying out a comprehensive assessment of all existing roads within Madang district over next the two months.
“The program is being undertaken by my office in partnership with Kramer Ausenco, the county’s leading civil and construction engineering company,” Mr Kramer said.
He said Kramer Ausenco was established in 1978 and has offices in Australia, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, Samoa and Tonga.
“The aim of the program is to carry out comprehensive survey to establish the condition and baseline of all existing roads within the district and then formulate a robust maintenance and road improvement program based on best practices,” Mr Kramer said.
He added that Madang district has a total of 480km of roads which comprises of 60km national roads which includes north and south roads and 14.3km Madang town roads.
Provincial rural roads within Madang district are 139.5km while the district rural roads are 292km.
